English and Math literacy Program for Deaf Adults
This program is designed for all Deaf and hard-of-hearing students who communicate in American Sign Language and desire to improve their
English literacy in order to effectively communicate with their superiors and colleagues in the employment setting. All levels of reading and
writing classes have access to sophisticated instructional technology, including computer labs and Smart classrooms. The program includes
five different levels of English classes and requires testing for reading, writing and computer skills prior to registration for appropriate placement. Make appointment for placement test with Roxann Richards-ChattooAs a continuing education student, you may also have access to a self-contained academic class in writing and reading if you have college
level English literacy skills. Course grades are determined by attendance, participation, grades on quizzes, homework assignments and a final exam.For registration information, visit the How to Register. Basic Skills in Reading (BSR)
This course is offered through the LaGuardia's Academic Affairs Division in preparation for college entry. Students must have at least 5th grade of reading level.
Basic Skills in Writing (BSW)
This course is offered through the LaGuardia's Academic Affairs Division in preparation for college entry. Students must have at least 5th grade of reading level.
Beginning Basic Education Level 1 for Deaf Adults
For advanced beginner Deaf adult readers and writers, you will read various stories, discuss your understandings, and write summaries and reactions to what you read. You will also write personal essays to express your ideas more clearly and correctly. Prerequisite: American Sign Language and TABE score between a 2 and 3.
Beginning Basic Education Level 2 for Deaf Adults
For Deaf adult readers and writers, you will read various stories, discuss your understandings, and write summaries and reactions to what you read. You will also write personal essays based on the readings to express your ideas more clearly and correctly. Prerequisite: American Sign Language and TABE score between a 3 and 4
For Deaf adults, prepare for college-level reading and writing in this theme-based course. Using the writing process, which will help you express ideas clearly and correctly, learn how to write essays that use evidence from the reading to support a thesis statement. You will also practice editing your essays by applying grammatical structures. Prerequisite: American Sign Language and TABE score above 4
GED Bridge to Cllege for Deaf Adults
For Deaf adults who are able to read and write in English at the seventh grade level, and solve basic Arithmatic functions and word problems. Advance your reading and writing skills in the context of subject areas covered by the GED exam (social studies, science, languange arts, reading, and writing). You will also focus on the following areas of GED Mathematics: probability, ratioand proportion, percents, measurements, graphs and tables, basic of algebra, geometry and word problems.
