Deaf Studies

The Liberal Arts AA Deaf Studies Option offers the most extensive set of courses in American Sign Language for college credit in the New York metropolitan area. Language development is supported, expanded and reinforced through internships and other assignments that involve interactions with diverse American Sign Language users.

A fluent command of American Sign Language gives a student a special advantage in preparing for careers in teaching, social work, counseling, ASL/English interpreting, psychology, rehabilitation counseling, audiology and many more. Those who wish to use their language immediately upon graduation from LaGuardia may work as teachers’ assistants, case managers, residential counselors, tutors, after-school education or recreation staff, child care workers, job coaches and others.
