PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

 

Since being established in 1975, LaGuardia Community College’s Program for Deaf Adults (PDA) continues to be a model, urban, post-secondary education and support program that enrolls the largest number of deaf and hard of hearing students in any institution of higher learning in the Greater Metropolitan New York area. Presently, PDA offers four comprehensive post-secondary educational programs to deaf, hard of hearing and hearing adults. The programs are Support Services for Academic Degree Students , Continuing Education Program and Interpreter Education Program.

SUPPORT SERVICES FOR ACADEMIC DEGREE STUDENTS
PDA’s Academic Degree Program provides academic counseling and support services for deaf and hard of hearing students enrolled at LaGuardia Community College to pursue an Associate in Arts or an Associate in Science degree. Specialized courses are taught in American Sign Language available to students including Basic Writing and Reading Skills, and English 101.

Support services provided include sign language interpreters, C-print Captionist, Academic Peer Instruction (API), note takers, tutors, testing accommodations, and workshops.

CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAM 
The mission of LaGuardia’s Division of Adult and Continuing Education is to serve as a force for educational, social and economic advancement in the community and city.

PDA’s Continuing Education Program is committed to developing and providing comprehensive programs and services to address the educational needs of Deaf and hard of hearing adults. Continuing Education courses offered include:

  • Academic Skills for Deaf Adults (ASDA)
  • American Sign Language, Levels I to V
  • Baby Fingers Mommy and Me
  • Individualized Instruction, one-on-one instruction in all educational disciplines 
  • College Preparation
  • Drivers Education ( Learner's Permit)
  • Keyboarding and Telecommunications Skills
  • Computer Skills and Training
  • Computer Maintenance for Non-Technicians

INTERPRETER EDUCATION PROJECTS 
Interpreter Education Projects (IEP) offers two programs to address the critical shortage of qualified sign language interpreters in New York City: a two year certificate interpreter training and continuing education workshops for working interpreters

The American Sign Language/English Interpreting Program is a two year, pre-service certificate program offering an academic curriculum for individuals wishing to become interpreters Workshops and Training Seminars are offered throughout the year for professional interpreters in New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands through the CUNY Interpreter Education Project (CIEP at LaGCC).
